Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process to adopt one of your puppies?
Before you place a deposit we always like to talk with you on the phone.  It is a big decision to adopt a puppy and we want to be sure that you are happy with your new furry family member.  After we talk on the phone you may place a deposit which is typically $300.  I will let you know when the mama comes in heat and then also when I confirm her pregnancy at 30 days along.  On the day that the puppies are born I will send you pictures and will let you know how many there are.   If there are not enough of the gender you told me that you wanted when you placed a deposit then you may receive a refund of your deposit.  When it is time to choose we can do Facetime or I can send videos/pictures of the puppy choices. Also be sure to go to my Facebook page @purejoypuppies to see videos and candid photos of your puppy.  We are no longer doing home visits.  We did this for many years but have decided to discontinue due to the risk for germs to our dogs and our family's safety.  Our puppies are ALWAYS raised inside our home.  Even though nothing too scary ever happened we have decided it is not in the best interest of our puppies and family's safety to have strangers come to our home anymore.  I'm sorry for the inconvience this may cause.  Choosing happens typically between 3-4 weeks old.

Each puppy has a colored collar that helps identify him/her.  Also I give them a name HOWEVER they will not be called that name by me at any time while they are here.  Please do NOT feel that you have to keep the name I identify them by.  I take a newborn picture of the litter then once the eyes are open (about 2 1/2 week to 3 weeks old) I take individual pictures.  I update all pics to me website and each puppy has his/her own slide show.

I try to make this as smooth of a process as possible.  I realize that we are all living busy lives and I try to keep things organized with clear communication.  Many families that have bought puppies from us later tell us how easy we were to work with and often refer their friends/family who then buy puppies from us too.

PLEASE make sure that you, your significant other, and/or children are ON board before you place a deposit.  I spend a LOT of time communicating with our puppy families and keeping you updated and answering questions and it is HEARTBREAKING when a family cancels right when the puppy is ready to go home at 8 weeks.

How old does my puppy need to be to come home with me?
Your puppy needs to be a minimum of 8 weeks old.  The last few weeks when your puppy is with his/her littermates he/she is learning valuable skills such as bite inhibition, turn taking, and how to play nicely.

What does my puppy come with?
Your puppy will come with registration papers (if applicable), vet health certificate, vaccination record, puppy contract, a toy, blanket with litter scent,  enough puppy food for 1-2 weeks (in case you want to transition to a new kind), a solid foundation for potty training, and most importantly completely LOVED and SPOILED by us.

I do not live nearby.  How do I get my puppy home?
We are willing to travel 2 hours from our home for no additional cost.  Many people choose this option and meet us part way.  For those of you who live further away,  we have had many people fly into Salt Lake International Airport (about one hour north of us) and then they pick up their new puppy and fly with him/her back home again.   Many airlines are VERY pet friendly.  Often you just need to make pre-arrangements with your airline.  You will need a small, fabric crate (think VERY small) that will fit under the seat in front of you.  This is an easy option and is not too traumatic for your puppy.  I can give you a pee pad to put in the crate.  We do NOT ship our puppies at this time in airplane cargo.  I KNOW that a lot of breeders DO ship their puppies but I believe it is too stressful for a little puppy.  We are now offering FREE DELIVERY TO LAS VEGAS NEVADA ON MOST LITTERS.  We have found that it is MUCH cheaper for many of our puppy families to fly into Las Vegas rather than Salt Lake City so for most litters IF there are at least two puppies needing to go to Las Vegas we will go there for free.  It is about a 5 1/2 hour drive each way for us.

What potty training method have you done and how should I continue to build upon what my puppy already knows?
At 3 weeks old we begin potty training.  We set up the puppies' pen so that they have an area to sleep in (which is kept very clean with blankets) and a potty area.  The mom of course is still nursing her puppies during this time.  She hops in and out and nurses them in their bed area.  Within about a week the puppies learn to keep their bedding clean and only go on the potty tray.  They are SO adorable as they wobble over to the potty area and wobble back to their bed area.  They learn from a young age that there are separate areas to SLEEP, PLAY, EAT, AND POTTY!.   This equates with easier house training.  Eventually your house is their den and they learn to not potty in it.    They use a potty tray (Little wolf potty tray from Amazon) with about 1 cup of pine wood pellets (from Tractor Supply, "Equine pine pellet bedding" 40#s for $5.69 or from Cal-Ranch "Dry Den pine pellet bedding" 40 lbs. for $8).  Do NOT use treated wood pelllets like you'd use for a woodstove!  I hang some toys in their pen.  By the time they leave at 8 weeks old 99% of their potty is in their potty tray.   When you get your puppy, I recommend setting up a similar set up for a couple of months.  You will still be taking them outside to go potty.  Just put some of the pine pellets where you want them to go. If you are gone all day you won't have to worry about your puppy trying to hold it too long.  By the time they are about 4-5 months old remove the litter box during the day and only take them outside to potty.  You may want to put it back in at night.   Trust me when you get your puppy you will be AMAZED by how easy it is to potty train because of this foundation.

Why do your puppies cost less than most other ones around?
We have literally been asked this SO many times.  We could charge much more for our puppies but we don't because we believe they should go to good families and many families cannot afford a puppy with an outrageous price tag.  But please know that no expense is spared in raising our pups.  When I have had to look for puppies to purchase to add new lines to our breeding program, I have been shocked by the cost, the lack of testing of the parents, and lack of training given to the puppies.  Sometimes it takes me two years to find a new dog to add to our lines that will improve the genetics and has the temperament I want.  I'm patient.  I wait until its a perfect match for what I need.  I just assumed everyone did things like we did.  But they don't.  Please do your homework and please don't think an outrageous price tag is going to give you excellent health and temperament.  It is not by accident that puppies are raised with excellent health and temperament.

Is my deposit refundable?
Your deposit is refundable IF the gender you intended to get is unavailable.  This means that you made it clear to me at time of deposit that you would only take a puppy of a certain gender.  If there are enough of the gender of puppy that you wanted and you decide to not get one, then your deposit is NOT refundable however it can be transferred to a future litter. Your deposit may be transferred a total of 3 times then  after the third time its non refundable.  This means that there were 3 litters with pups available to you of the gender you wanted and you passed on them.   ALSO your deposit is refundable IF there was a life threatening or genetic problem discovered while the puppy is in our care.   If we made all deposits refundable then there would be no point in taking deposits.  We will literally spend hours communicating with each family via texts, phone calls, emails, and in person before a puppy goes home.  We respect that your time is valuable and ask that you respect that our time is as well.  We are SO happy to share our love of our dogs with you but ask that you please educate yourself and be prepared to follow through with your commitment to a puppy once you place a deposit.
